Doug Cullen

Starting September 12, 2017 - Ending October 12, 2017

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Doug Cullen.  A NOVAAR member and a gifted teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Doug passed away on 3 September after a brief illness. For the past few years he had served as the advisor to the school's Aerospace Club with multiple teams participating in TARC and the Battle of the Rockets each year. He was a familiar sight at NOVAAR's launches offering guidance and encouragement to many students always with a positive attitude and a grand sense of humor. This summer he reworked the curriculum and taught two week long STEM courses at NVCC created to teach high school students how to design and build a TARC rocket. Doug will be greatly missed.

A Celebration for Doug was held last Wednesday at TJ. Over 100 people attended, mostly teachers who worked with Doug, some former students who returned from college and a number of current students. Doug's sisters, brother and nephew were present. The new principal at TJ set the tone with an eloquent introduction to the celebration. The student president of the TJ rocketry club presented a wonderful tribute to Doug. It was fitting recognition of an outstanding teacher and friend. A service will be held by the family in Kent, Ohio at the end of September. The family asked that no flowers be sent as Doug could not abide ruining a perfectly good flower by cutting in. Condolences may be sent to: Ronald Cullen, 185 Howe Rd. Kent, Ohio 44240.
