Capitol Cup 16 and 17 September

Every two years NOVAAR hosts an international rocket contest called the Capitol Cup. We have been hosting it since 2007 on odd-numbered years. This contest is sanctioned by the international governing body for all aeromodelling, the FAI, and the models and rules are the same as those flown in the biennial World Championships of rocketry. This aspect of the sport is described on the NAR website at . The Capitol Cup will be attended by most members of the US Team that will be competing in the World Championship in Poland in 2018. They will travel here from all over the country to practice together and will be joined by five Canadian FAI flyers. The Capitol cup will held on both Saturday, 16 September, and Sunday, 17 September, at Great Meadow. NOVAAR will hold a normal rocket launch on Saturday, but not on Sunday. Details of the event are listed below.

 Sanctioned by: Federation Aeronautique Internationale, World Cup event #11785                       •  World Cup events: S4A, S6A, S8E/P, S9A • Open International Events: S3A, S2/P               •  Capitol Cup is also sanctioned as an NAR competition for the S3A, S4A, S6A, and S9A events, flown as FAI-style multiround NAR events.                                                                        • Contestants must have an FAI license (from any NAC) to fly in the World Cup. With an NAR license they may optionally (instead of, or in addition to the FAI World Cup) fly in the NAR event.  Medals given for FAI only.

Flying Site: Great Meadow Outdoor Center, 5089 Old Tavern Rd, The Plains, VA 20198 This is a 240-acre site, but trees on the perimeter will challenge S3A fliers! The site is 16 miles from the hotel, go west on I-66 to exit 31 and turn left.

Hotel: Days Inn Manassas 7249 New Market Court, Manassas, VA 20109, (703) 369-1700 Located at I-66 exit 47A, in the direction of Manassas town, right at the first light after the exit. Rooms for Sept 15 & 16 held at a rate of $55 plus 13% tax, until August 21 under event name “Capitol Cup”. Contact the hotel directly to reserve under your credit card by that date.

Dinner: 7:15 PM Saturday Sept 16 at Aurora Flight Sciences, 9950 Wakeman Drive, Manassas, VA 20110. Cost $20, pay at registration. US Team meeting after dinner. Notes: Advance registration for the contest is not required, however both contestants and other participants (range crew, etc.) are requested to advise the Contest Director no later than September 12 if you plan to attend the dinner, and how many are in your party, so we can order dinner accurately. All events must be flown only with motors certified by the NAR for use in the USA.

NOTES: Schedule is subject to adjustment based on weather conditions. If weather interrupts flying, priority will be given to completing the FAI World Cup events. S2/P fliers will provide their own altimeters. Only the FAI-approved Adrel type of altimeters may be used.
