Scouting Space Exploration Merit Badge

Twice a year at Camp Snyder the NOVAAR club sponsors a morning building session for requirement 3 of the Space Exploration merit badge followed by, weather permitting, an afternoon launch session.

The next event is scheduled for April 26, 2008.

  • Empty seats: 15
  • Scouts waiting: 0

Schedule:

  • The class starts promptly at 1000. (Please note the new time.)
  • If the build session goes well, there will be time from approximately 1100 for Scouts to sign off on merit badge requirements.
  • Lunch is from 1200 to 1230.
  • The launch starts, weather permitting, at approximately 1300 hours.
  • The launch will end by 1500 hours, or earlier if weather mandates or we are done.

Your responsibilities:

  • Pre-register for the class by emailing NOVAAR's Scouting Coordinator with your name, email address, and telephone number. There are no "on site" or walk-in registrations. NOVAAR does not charge for this class or for materials. If you cannot make the class please let us know so that we can let someone from the waiting list attend!
  • Get a current copy of the Space Exploration merit badge book. These are available in local stores and online. One source is ScoutStuff.
  • Read and understand the entire book! There is not enough time during the build session to teach you the material in the book. It is your responsibility to know the material. Please pay special attention to identifying the parts of a model rocket as required by item three.
  • Review the material with your ScoutMaster and have your ScoutMaster sign a "blue card" promising that you understand the material.
  • Be on time and bring the signed "blue card", clothing, lunch, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, and insect repellent appropriate for the weather. If it is "nice" we'll run the building session outside. If the weather is marginal we will build inside.
  • Be on your best behavior. Building and launching rockets is fun but safety is paramount.
  • Please read and understand the NAR safety rules before the day of the event.
  • You are also responsible for arranging for your own transportation to and from the camp.
  • You may bring other model rockets for the launch and if there is sufficient time, and they pass safety review, you may launch them using your own motors and supplies.
  • If you want to sign off on requirements other than number 3 then it is your responsibility to learn the material and prepare any displays or presentations before the class day.

NOVAAR's responsibilities:

  • We will supply you with a basic rocket kit that you may build and keep.
  • We will bring the basic tools and glue that you will need to build the rocket. We'll keep the tools and glue for a later build session.
  • Weather permitting, we will setup and run a model rocket range running under the NAR safety rules.
  • If the weather does not permit launching NOVAAR will supply you with two coupons that you may redeem at a future NOVAAR launch at Great Meadow for the motor, igniter, and recovery wadding that you need to accomplish your two flights.

For more information please contact NOVAAR's Scouting Coordinator.
